WHAT'S NEW FOR 10.04.2012:
http://www.gravemistakerecords.com/catalog/products_new.php

Some great new releases and a solid amount of reissues in this update; I'm always trying to keep the classics and reissues in stock and available - everything from brand new reissues to obscure vault finds to staple titles that never went away, in the hopes that you'll stumble across a long forgotten gem or revisit an old favorite! This update has some killer reissues I've been meaning to get for a while now, as well as restocked on a bunch of titles I've had for a bit so hopefully you find something that sparks your interest!

Anyways, let's start with the new releases for now.  Two awesome new LPs including the debut 12" from Boston's PRISONER ABUSE and the second LP from Texas' WICCANS; both are highly recommended (I also restocked the first WICCANS LP, "Skullduggery")!  Also picked up a couple of copies of the new TITLE FIGHT LP, and the newest DIRTNAP release, the LEGENDARY WINGS LP.  Finally picked up a few copies of the latest GENTLEMAN JESSE LP (I know it's been out for a bit now, but for those of you who haven't picked it up yet, get it!) ... Grabbed some rad new 7"s too including the US pressing of the first DESPERAT 7" (the original european pressing being a bit hard to come by in the states) courtesy of BEACH IMPEDIMENT RECORDS; the debut 7" from NY's DEFORMITY; an awesome two song single from Boston's SIAMESE TWINS (highly recommended); and to keep things posi, the second EP from Richmond's BREAK AWAY on new RVA label SOLID BOND RECORDS. Also stocked up on two sick demos, from Canada's HARHAA and Richmond's PISSHEADS.

On the reissue front, stocked up on some more copies of the classic DICKS "Hate the Police" 7" (we've had a fanclub version before, but this one is official!); grabbed a few awesome LP reissues courtesy of the 4 MEN WITH BEARDS label including the incredible SHOP ASSISTANTS LP, the DMZ LP, and the classic WIRE "Pink Flag" LP; picked up some of the URINALS fanclub 7"; the F.U.2. LP; killer double LP reissue from CLEVELAND's THE GUNS; for you full on thrashers, check out the reissues from BLACKTASK and CURRICULUM MORTIS; picked up a few more punk rock classics from the likes of DESCENDENTS, ALL, and DOA; grabbed three more volumes of the PEBBLES LP comps.  Also stocked up on a few more SING SING titles that I'd been missing, including singles from AMBULANCE, SHAMBLES, and SPELLING MISTAKES.

A TON of restocks this update as well, including the BIG EYES "Hard Life" LP, AVENGERS LP, six different volumes of the KILLED BY DEATH series, CARBONAS LP, COLA FREAKS LP, three EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING titles, all five (count em!) SPITS LPs back in stock, two PAGANS reissues, classic titles from BLACK FLAG, MINUTEMEN, DESCENDENTS, the awesome CITY LIMITS Toronto/Montreal HC comp, WHERE BIRDMEN FLEW comp (killer Aussie KBD!), the first WHITE WIRES LP, WIPERS "Is this Real" and "Over the Edge" LPs, the first CONFINES 7", NECROS "Sex Drive" (fanclub) 7", NOMAD 7", RAZAR 7", RED CROSS "Rich Brat" (fanclub) 7", and much much more!!!! Check the full list below!

That's all for now, thanks for reading and for your continued support!

NEW IN THE WEBSTORE FOR 10.05.12:

PRISONER ABUSE "S/T" LP (PAINKILLER)
Boston based group with its long belated 10-track debut of regional traditionalism. Tunes to carry the Al Barile + Jack Kelly tradition of The Straight Edge circa '82 onward and upward while simultaneously discarding their work in subsequent decades. Members of Think I Care, Waste Management, No Tolerance, Mind Eraser.

WICCANS "II" LP (KATORGA WORKS)
Thematically influenced by science fiction and boasting a rich analog recording worthy of their sound, Field II finds NWOTHC veterans Wiccans indulging in their most occult proclivities and traversing into unknown, psychedelic territory. Akin to Tyranny and Mutation-era Blue Öyster Cult, but as a hardcore punk band, Wiccans has created a wholly unique and essential aural experience.

DESPERAT "DEMOKRATI ELLER DIKTATUR" 7" (BEACH IMPEDIMENT)
"DEMOKRATI ELLER DIKTATUR?" features six tracks of raw Swedish D-Beat hardcore executed by some familiar faces who left an undeniable impact on the genre decades ago and continue to churn out punk hits. This EP was previously only available from Sweden's De:Nihil Records in a limited amount that sold out within a matter of days, but is now available once again from Beach Impediment for those who missed out the first time around. Each record comes in a glue pocket sleeve with a slightly different layout and color scheme than the original pressing. B.I.R. is proud to bring you the US pressing of this modern hardcore crusher featuring members of MOB 47 and WARVICTIMS, among others. First press limited to 500 copies. Play fuckin' loud.

SIAMESE TWINS "IN A BOX" 7" (LABOR OF LOVE)
Two songs of dream pop perfection from the women that have brought you the likes of Ampere, Libyans, and Confines. Siamese Twins follow their acclaimed self-released 2011 demo with a vinyl debut reminiscent of the early 4AD and Slumberland catalogs. Fans of the Cocteau Twins, The Cure, and sad songs, take note.  Five hundred copies on black. Sleeves and inserts on specialty, uncoated stock.

DEFORMITY "S/T" 7" (ALWAYS RESTRICTIONS)
"Debut EP from these New York hardcore punks on Always Restrictions Records, Ian from Perdition's label. Given that connection and the artwork, you can safely assume that these folks are associated with the whole Crazy Spirit camp, though Deformity have a bit of a different sound than those bands. The core is lose, wild hardcore punk that reminds me of early Husker Du or maybe even Articles of Faith's early stuff, but Deformity aren't afraid to go on different tangents, like the blistering guitar freak-out in the a-side, "Shards." So, while Deformity definitely have their own sound they share the Toxic State dedication to defiantly doing your own thing and having an original but still incredibly intense sound. Highly recommended." - sorrystaterecords.com

DICKS "HATE THE POLICE" 7" (1234 GO)
The first legitimate issue in 32 years! Originally on the band's own Radical Records, this has been out of print since its initial pressing. Truly one of the greatest and most sought after American punk singles produced in the ‘80s. Hugely influential to folks as far apart as Mudhoney and Limp Wrist. Unapologetically communist, gay and pissed off. Faithful reproduction of the cover and insert included.

BREAK AWAY "THE FEW THAT REMAIN" 7" (SOLID BOND)
On their second EP, Richmond's BREAK AWAY bring five songs of straight forward no frills Straight Edge hardcore in the vein of Judge. Richmond's next generation.

LEMON DOTS "GIRL IN MOTION" 7" (LABOR OF LOVE)
Four songs of hyperactive 60s girl-pop flailing in an undertow of magnetic hisses, squalls and squeals. Imagine The Maroons’ “Out Tonight” clinging to an electric fence while being flayed by an out-of-control drum machine wielded by Lesley Gore. Brainchild of Home Blitz guitarist Theresa Smith.  Three hundred copies pressed on custom-mixed opaque yellow vinyl. Full color glued sleeves and inserts on Speckletone stock.

MAMMOTH GRINDER "OBSESSED WITH DEATH" 7" (HELL MASSACRE)
A quick one from Mammoth Grinder. Obsessed with Death burns a driving Master/Deathstrike style attack as good as anyone's done it since the originators - this one's filthy like a coffin full of maggots. On the flip is a rendition of Venom's classic cut, "Welcome To Hell", taken from a radio set earlier this year.

SPITS, THE "PAIN" 7" (SLOVENLY)
To coincide with the release of the new LP by the reigning kings of psychedelic skate punk, Slovenly Recordings is proud to present four additional brand new tracks from THE SPITS on a 45 that rivals any of their long players for pure chaos and stupidity. It's been awhile since they last recorded, but The Spits, as always, deliver a quick and trippy Atari 2600 on crack ass-whooping that'll leave you with a double dose of black eye! And if that ain't enough for you, this 7-inch monster features a cover version of PAIN’s "I Dig Pain" from the classic punk rock "Battle Of The Bands" episode of C.H.i.P.s! Lesser bands have tried in the past to cover this song, but only The Spits give it the weirdness it deserves. Of course Pain lost the battle in that episode, but we all know who the real losers are!

URINALS "ANOTHER" 7" (FANCLUB)
The Urinals are a punk rock band from Southern California. Known for their minimalist approach to songwriting and recording--their lyrics have been called "punk haiku"--the band influenced other punk rockers of the 1970's and 1980's including the Minutemen.  Repro of these southern California punks 2nd single. Featuring the punk classics "Black Hole","I'm White & Middle Class","I'm A Bug" and "ack Ack Ack."

SHAMLBES "HELLO BABY" 7" (SING SING)
Shambles were led by ex-Mandrake Paddle Steamer singer Brian Engel and their only single is made up of two absolute corkers. Hello Baby is a great hi-energy Power Pop/Glam number that is totally infectious and the B side, the wild and rockin' Held Me Spellbound is as good if not better than Jook covering Watch Your Step. More than inspired by That's Alright Mama, Spellbound features 2 blistering lead guitar breaks that will strip your walls bare. Both tracks are wonderfully loud and bright thanks to the great Roy Thomas Baker production.

SPELLING MISTAKES, THE "FEELS SO GOOD" 7" (SING SING)
Formed in 1979 from the remnants of two bands, Get Smart and The Aliens, their line-up was Nick Hanson (vocals), Julian Hanson (drums), and Warwick Fowler (guitar). Initial bassist, Keith Bacon, was replaced early in 1980 by Nigel Russell.  Released in 1980, the 'Feels So Good' EP was well received, but problems began to mount: Fowler had acquired the habit of wearing a Nazi SS uniform on stage, which combined with the quartet's pre-existing "boot boy" following resulted in a total ban from the Auckland club scene.  Even so, the record reached number 29 in New Zealand and probably could of sold more but the label lacked funding.  They were even approached by Phonogram and asked to contribute to a 'solid gold' type album however when Phonogram heard the song they immediately asked for their compilation advance cheque back.

AMBULANCE "IT'S ALL UP TO YOU" 7" (SING SING)
Finally! This lone single from New Jersey's Ambulance sits in the top tier of power pop 45s and is usually only afforded by serious collectors but now its here for mass consumption! Consisting of Steve William (gtr), Johnny C. (b) and Bobby Padula (d), the trio would call the legendary Dirt club in Bloomfield, NJ their homebase (they even did a commerical for them) but were also known to frequently play the NYC punk clubs. The single, recorded in 1978, and originally issued in an edition of 1000 copies, was well recieved at the time and got decent airplay.

BLACKTASK "BLACKTASK / SPIKES TO THE WALL" LP (RADIO RAHEEM)
BLACKTASK was a Philadelphia metal band that existed from 1983 to 1987. Heavily influenced by Venom, Motorhead, early Slayer and a dash of punk, their initial releases — a three-song demo tape (1984) and a self-released four-song 12" EP (1985) — were a crude, no-fi bash fest that dealt with only the most uncompromising subject matter, such as killing enemies and smashing your fucking face. This limited edition LP contains Blacktask's ultra rare eponymous 12" ep from 1985, backed with their 1984 Spikes To The Wall demo tape, 9 songs total. Includes a repro of the original lyric sheet and a 12x24" poster collecting various original write ups, reviews and rare photos. 500 made on black vinyl.

CURRICULUM MORTIS "SENTENCIA DE MUERTE" LP (ULTRA SONIDO)
Previously only known to the most die hard of underground tape traders, Curriculum Mortis' debut 1988 demo, Sentencia de Muerte, is a raw and ferocious mix of hardcore and thrash metal that South American bands mastered in the late 1980s. Seven songs over the course of 30 minutes, for the first time ever on vinyl.  Hailing from Lima, Peru, this is a must for any fan of raw South American punk and metal! Limited to 500 copies.

TITLE FIGHT "FLORAL GREEN" LP (SIDE ONE DUMMY)
Floral Green is Title Fight’s The second full-length release. Recorded with Will Yip at Studio 4 Recording in Conshohocken, PA during May and June of 2012.  As with everything Title Fight does, has done, and will continue to do, Floral Green is an exercise in earnestness, of playing music and singing words that express, with absolute pinpoint precision, what is felt, and doing so in unguarded, unmediated, and un-ironic terms. The album’s lyrics provide a blow-by-blow account of human feeling in all its complexity and, it has to be said, in all its ugliness. They reveal the frightening-to-plumb depths of resentment, self-doubt, cowardice, and duplicity that we all know are somewhere inside us.  Also, and not incidentally, the album contains talk of loving homeland and family, of gratitude for life’s opportunities and its occasional swells of transcendent happiness. Ultimately, Floral Green is a leading-by-example repudiation of cynicism and narcissism. It amounts to a persuasive argument in favor of presenting yourself exactly as you are. Exactly as you’ve always been.

SCREECHING WEASEL "ANTHEM FOR A NEW TOMORROW" LP (RECESS)
SCREECHING WEASEL's great fifth full-length! This one has spent years as my favorite Weasel album only to be crowned and then uncrowned many times by their mighty 1991 epic My Brain Hurts. Either way, both albums have stood the test of time. If MBH was a cross between The Ramones and The Dickies, Anthem can draw from The Freeze, Wire and The Kinks (Village Green era).

LEGENDARY WINGS "MAKING PAPER ROSES" LP (DIRTNAP)
It happens very rarely (like a couple of times over the course of 120 releases) that we here at Dirtnap get a random CD-R demo in the mail, pop it in, listen to it a couple of times, and then slap our fist down on the counter and say "fuck it, we'll put that out!" And that's just what happened in the case of Kalamzoo, MI's Legendary Wings. Unsolicited demos are largely a lousy way to round up new bands for the label, but once in a blue moon you get one that's just THAT good.  Musically, the apple that is Legendary Wings doesn't fall TOO far from the tree that is Dirtnap Records, (think caffeiniated, raw, fast pop), but they are also unmistakably, instantly identifiable as originating from the Midwest. Potential Johns meets Gaunt? Scared Of Chaka if they were from Minneapolis? Denton with jangle?  The band has been on several tours, released a 7" on Tic Tac Totally and a track on a UFO Dictator comp 7" were featured at Goner Fest 7, and are about to release an LP on the powerhouse record label, Dirtnap Records.  Their mix of caffeinated instrumentation, and overly sensitive lyrics will make you melt if the mood is right.

F.U.2 "PUNK ROCK" LP (1234 GO)
Fake Punk can be some of the best punk! The late 70's had a bevy of great punk/power pop one off bands. Often secretly and not so secretly fronted by members of famous/semi-famous rock groups. The Pack, Pork Dukes, The Greedies, The Monks (UK) top amongst them but one of the longest and loudest lauded is F.U.2.. Raw, snotty, and jammed up with hooks and attitude. The group was essentially the 60's garage/freakbeat band Downliners Sect under an assumed Punk name and recorded over a case of Vodka. What came out is some of the realest fake punk you'll ever here. THE EXPLODING HEARTS would later cover their classic "Sniffin' Glue" which many incorrectly think was a Hearts original. The album has been bootlegged many times since it's release over 30 years ago and is finally being treated to a legitimate reissue sourced from the original tapes! Limited run so grab it while you can.

GUNS, THE "S/T" 2xLP (SMOG VEIL)
Hands down a top-end standard by which all other basement hardcore bands should be measured, Cleveland hardcore history could not have been the same without THE GUNS. SCOTT EAKIN and DAVE ARACA formed the band originally as a 2-piece, later adding to the lineup some amazing rippers in the form of SEAN SALEY, BOB RIES and SCOTT SILVERMAN. Though a couple compilation appearances is all they managed back in the day, this release collects those tracks plus all other studio recordings, as well as some choice live cuts. The LP also features VINCE RANCID’s original cover art as commissioned by the band in the ‘80s. Green friendly 100% recycled content packaging. Two inserts. Black vinyl, strictly limited to 1 press of 900. Gatefold sleeve. 43 tracks spread over 2 LPs, free download code. All recorded between 1982 and 1986.

SHOP ASSISTANTS "S/T" LP (4 MEN WITH BEARDS)
Edinburgh indie-pop group, THE SHOP ASSISTANTS, formed in 1984 and released this, their one and only full length album in 1986. That same year they were featured on the legendary NME compilation, C86, the name of which is now commonly used to refer to a specific type of influential jangle-pop that Shop Assistants traffic in. A classic of the genre on par with the best of The Pastels or The Wedding Present. Essential.

VANNA INGET "ALLVAR" LP (1234 GO)
Another in the long line of great Swedish punk bands coming out now! Melodic, urgent and at times meloncholic. Singer KAROLINA has a intense, crystal clear voice that coupled with the rest of the band recall's elements of early California punk like the Avengers and more modern counterparts like Vicious, Masshysteri, Terrible Feelings or the Bombettes. Very limited US pressing of the album in anticipation of the band touring here in 2012. Only a few hundred copies are available in the US.

GENTLEMAN JESSE "LEAVING ATLANTA" LP (DOUCHEMASTER)
Since Gentleman Jesse’s first album came out in the summer of 2008, he’s had plenty of excuses to put the “Gentleman” part of his act to bed. In fact, the Mr. Nice Guy routine landed him in bed for a month after being mugged and beaten with a table leg while he was trying to help two strangers change a tire. When the economy tanked, violent crime in Atlanta exploded, making the city a dreary place to live for a while. In addition, several tragedies hit the Atlanta music scene and the Douchemaster Records family close to home. It was a bad time and Jesse took it very personally. He was close to throwing in the towel and retiring to a dark room with cheap beer and YouTube videos.  To cope with the reality of living in a place that was going straight to hell, Jesse went down to the basement of his house and wrote twenty songs that would become Leaving Atlanta. What could have easily become a bummer record ended up being nothing short of inspiring. The album is bookended by “Eat Me Alive,” an anthem of perseverance that was for Jesse a demon-exercising tool, and another mover titled “We Got to Get Out of Here,” which is less about getting out of an actual location and more about getting out of a state of mind.  Stylistically, Jesse never strays from his bread and butter: short, hook-driven and delicately patterned rock ’n’ roll songs. One could compare him to Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello or Paul Collins ’til the cows come home, but at this point Gentleman Jesse sounds like Gentleman Jesse. Leaving Atlanta is Jesse hitting his personal and musical stride.

LOST SOUNDS "LOST LOST DEMOS, SOUNDS..." LP w/ 7" (GONER)
Featuring early and alternate versions from Jay Reatard and Alicja Trout’s epic garage / electro-punk band Lost Sounds, Lost Lost collects songs off the Black Wave and Rats Brains and Microchips albums and their final self-titled EP, as well as ones that never saw proper release. The rare and unheard material ranges from captivating kitchen recordings and acoustic takes to fully realized studio tracks. Covers of garage obscurities like “I Cannot Lie” and originals like “No Count” betray the garage rock sensibilities that Reatard was still shedding during the earlier years of the band, while later recordings show the electropunk and black metal influences that crept into their sound.  A great collection from a great band and a couple of great songwriters—maestros of tension without release—Lost Lost will appeal to everyone from garage and punk fanatics to Numanoids and metalheads.

HARD SKIN "HARD NUTS AND HARD CUNTS" LP (BROKEN REKIDS)
Hard Skin’s Hard Nuts and Hard Cunts is the brilliant and groundbreaking debut album from one of the fiercest oi! bands to emerge from the streets of London. First released on Helen of Oi! in 1996, it was an instant street-punk mega-hit embraced by skins, punks and herberts alike. Thanks to renowned NYHC imprint Broken Rekids, this classic platter is once again available on vinyl, now featuring a deluxe, old-style tip-on jacket, digital download coupon and one bonus track not on the original version! Comprised of Johnny Takeaway (vocals, guitar), Fat Bob (bass, vocals) and Nosher (drums, vocals), Hard Skin have toured every corner of the globe, performing their unique brand of brickwall oi! for rabid fans the world over and releasing critically acclaimed, chart-topping masterpieces such as Same Meat Different Gravy and Live and Loud! & Skinhead.

SWINGIN UTTERS "JUVENILE PRODUCT OF THE WORKING CLASS" LP (FAT WRECK)
"Even though a lot of the same elements on their first album can be found on Juvenile Product of the Working Class, the Swingin' Utters still manage to put out some of the catchiest working class anthems for the '90s. The take-no-crap attitude, gruff songwriting, and British accents are still present, but somehow these guys manage to outdo The Streets of San Francisco -- they've progressed as a band and even have acoustic guitars and accordions incorporated into their tunes. It's easy to say that this is what Stiff Little Fingers should have sounded like after Nobody's Heroes. " - allmusic.com

WIRE "PINK FLAG" LP (4 MEN WITH BEARDS)
Originally released on Harvest in 1977, Pink Flag is perhaps the most original debut album to come out of the first wave of British punk. Exhibiting severe art school damage, Wire careens at breakneck speed through 21 songs in 36 minutes to create an album that has influenced bands for nearly thirty years. Original artwork. 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

DMZ "S/T" LP (4 MEN WITH BEARDS)
Originally released in 1978 on Sire Records, DMZ's first and only album never really fit into the punk/new-wave mold that was forced upon it. These five shaggy haired dudes from Boston were more interested in the Sonics than the Sex Pistols and their goal, as stated by frontman JEFF “MONO MAN” CONOLLY was "fusing the sound of the Chocolate Watchband and The Stooges." Produced by FLO & EDDIE of The Turtles' fame, this album was much maligned at the time but has come to be accepted as a classic record that helped jump start the ongoing garage-rock revival that began in the '80s. In fact, Mono Man, upon the breakup of DMZ, founded the group LYRES in 1979, a legendary garage-rock band that carry on to this day."

DOA "HARDCORE 81" LP (SUDDEN DEATH)
This Vancouver foursome was already a band to be reckoned with on their first three singles and debut, Something Better Change, but they went for the jugular on Hardcore '81, producing a rare and astonishing moment for the ages, a direct precursor to the Replacements' first LP torch job later that year. With the greatest drummer in punk history in Chuck Biscuits and an equally smokin' bassist in Randy Rampage, 1978-1982 D.O.A. had an unbelievably intense rhythm section to back the heavy, two-guitar power of Joey Shithead and Dave Gregg. With chops that actually bettered their primary influence, the Clash, and a take-on-all-comers attitude, these guys rocked -- and they knew it. With the exception of the much different, faster, more thrash Bad Brains debut, nothing else in the then-new hardcore genre came close to this wild LP. These 14 songs whip by quick with great thrill and tumult, an unusual, fun mixture of drinking buddy "I Don't Give a Shit" party tunes ("My Old Man's a Bum," "Fucked Up Baby"), wry, sardonic culture commentary ("M.C.T.F.D." aka "Middle Class Television Family Daughter," "Unknown"), and sobering sociopolitical outrage ("D.O.A.," "Smash the State," "Slumlord"). But what you can't forget are the machine-gun Biscuits fills, triggered by the merest hint of any looming chord change yet totally anchored on Rampage's booming bass. Or Gregg and Keithley's hot riffs that are so thick and yet slippery that they threaten to explode. Or Keithley's likable bear-growl vocals, as full of bonhomie good-guy spirit and wicked humor as they are with his sweat and vigor. Or songs so catchy, you want to sing them as loud as your lungs will take you. But like the '60s Who, '70s Clash, and '70s Buzzcocks (other bands of this same rank), they just don't come around often. Good thing they made Hardcore '81 before they left us.

ALL "ALLROY SEZ" LP (CRUZ)
After the Descendents' lead singer Milo Aukerman left the band in 1987, the remaining members chose to continue playing together under a different name and with a new vocalist, former Dag Nasty frontman Dave Smalley. This is the first material they released after forming.

DESCENDENTS "SOMERY" 2xLP (SST)
Somery is a compilation album (a "greatest hits" of sorts) by the Los Angeles-based punk rock band the Descendents, released in 1991 through SST Records. It compiles songs from the Fat EP (1981) and the albums Milo Goes to College (1982), I Don't Want to Grow Up (1985), Enjoy! (1986), and All (1987).  Somery was released in 1991, compiling tracks from the Descendents' past studio releases. Stevenson created the cover art for the compilation while Egerton did the graphics.

DESCENDENTS "ALL" LP (SST)
All is the fourth album by the Los Angeles-based punk rock band the Descendents, released in 1987 through SST Records. It was their first album with guitarist Stephen Egerton and bassist Karl Alvarez, and their final studio album before singer Milo Aukerman left the band to pursue a career in biochemistry. The album is titled after the concept of "All", invented by drummer Bill Stevenson and friend Pat McCuistion in 1980. Based on the goals of achieving "the total extent" and "to not settle for some, to always go for All", the philosophy was the subject of the one-second title track, the two-second "No, All!", and "All-O-Gistics"

V/A - "PEBBLES VOL. 4" LP (BFD)
Pebbles, Volume 4 is a compilation album in the Pebbles series.  Unlike other volumes in the series – which compile obscure garage rock and psychedelic rock music – Volume 4 collects rare examples of surf rock.

V/A - "PEBBLES VOL. 3" LP (BFD)
Pebbles Vol. 3 focuses on obscure mid 60s psychedelic rock, is one of the most exciting albums ever. This is full blown, mind-pulverizing, acid-drenched rock 'n' roll dementia.with fuzz guitars and pounding rhythms are mixed with bizarre lyrics, trippy production, instrumrntal freak-outs, and the occasional burst of random noise. The result is a collection of songs that combine the raw joy of standard 60s garage rock with the weirdness of avant guard artists of the era, such as the Velvet Underground. Think that these songs were more produced more than 40 years ago!!!!

V/A - "PEBBLES VOL. 2" LP (BFD)
Pebbles, Vol. 2 is part of the original series of '60s garage punk collections that began in 1979. The opening number, "Makin' Deals" by the Satans, is a mid-tempo rocker featuring a vocalist who snarled "Can you guess my name?!?" two years before Mick Jagger pranced through "Sympathy for the Devil." "99th Floor," an organ-driven stomper recorded in 1967, features ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons. Sons of Adam do a respectable cover version of Arthur Lee's "Feathered Fish"; this is followed by an extra track, a '60s commercial in which the Electric Prunes endorse the Vox wah-wah pedal. "You Rub Me the Wrong Way" is a good fuzz-drenched B-side by the Road from the surprisingly late date of 1969. "So What" by the Lyrics and "Bad Girl" by Zakary Thaks rank among the best numbers in this collection, which probably explains why they were included in the Nuggets box set. "Lost Innocence" by the Buddhas is hyped-up bubblegum rock, while the fantastically crude "Green Fuz" by Randy Alvey & Green Fuz makes the Cramps' cover version sound like a symphony orchestra in comparison. Little Boy Blues, who are from Chicago, do a spirited version of "I Can Only Give You Everything"; Bobby Fuller, who is from Texas, covers "Wine, Wine, Wine," which was a local hit for the Nightcaps; the Dovers, who do "She's Gone" and "What Am I Going to Do," are somewhat reminiscent of the Ju Ju's; and Phil & the Frantics, who do "I Must Run," are somewhat reminiscent of the Zombies. The Choir, one of the better obscure '60s bands (and the progenitor of the Raspberries), do the Merseybeat-influenced "It's Cold Outside" (which can be found on the Nuggets box set). The CD also includes their Rolling Stones-influenced "I'm Coming Home," which is not even on the group's Choir Practice compilation. Other CD bonus tracks include "Be a Caveman" by L.A.'s Avengers (not to be confused with several other bands with the same name, including the '70s West Coast punk band), "She'll Lie" by Satan & D-Men, "Freedom of Love" by Undesyded, "Don't Want Your Lovin'" by Mark IV, and "Crazy Things" by Quid; however, the CD version of Pebbles, Vol. 2 omits the Squires, who do "Go Ahead," and the Litter, who do a Yardbirds-inspired rave-up of Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man." In any case, this is an excellent collection that should appeal to those who are want to delve deeper into the treasure chest of '60s garage punk music.

V/A - "SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN" COMP LP (BYO)
Culled almost entirely from two important, early-'80s So-Cal punk compilations, this CD is red hot a decade later. This is 15/18ths of 1982's Someone Got Their Head Kicked In (all but the three Blades tracks, which though good were the least of the LP), and 10/16ths of 1984's Something to Believe In (missing are the tracks by Unwanted -- L.A.'s, not 1977 London's -- Tourists, Youth Youth Youth, Young Lions, Zeroption, and D.O.A.; some good, some eh, though D.O.A.'s hot, funny "Tits on the Beach" -- another look at that same subject as the Stranglers' "Peaches" -- is sadly missed). Though it's likely an issue of rights to the material for re-release, it would have been better to reissue the two LPs as was, rather than stripping them of nine tracks to replace them with six songs (albeit equally good ones) from later BYO releases. From Head Kicked In, the two old, pre-first LP demos by the Adolescents are vital, great-sounding punk history, plus the 1982 Social Distortion's otherwise unknown masher "Mass Hysteria," a couple of the finest Youth Brigade songs -- including "Look in the Mirror," which should have made one of the two versions of its debut LP Sound and Fury the next year. The two tracks by the Joneses (the L.A. Dolls' rock, not the later crap Joneses) are fun, Aggression still rocks, and Battallion of Saints shreds. From Something, there's no arguing with Channel 3's proud punk-pop "Indian Summer," which came just before the bandmembers became alcoholics and got into the Alarm. And best of all, the Nils' stunning "Scratches and Needles," one of the defining moments by Montreal's best band ever, is so good it was the opening track on that LP despite the band's obscurity (they should've used the original version from the stupidly limited-edition, 300-print Now EP cassette, which is even more awesome). Youth Brigade (again) and Personality Crisis are terrific. If you care at all about U.S. classic punk, this is a super guide because it has so many great songs in one place by so many great bands. The BYO's Stern brothers (of Youth Brigade) had ears for melodies and tunes were abundant in L.A. (and Canada) back then, and that's why it's dated well.
