GRAVE MISTAKE WEBSTORE UPDATE / March 24, 2015

Holy hell, it's been a minute since you've last seen a Grave Mistake webstore update! I hope everyone has been well over the past couple of months; I've been steadily accumulating releases for the store which are finally up and ready for a new update. I'll try and keep this as short as can be, so let's get right to it.

First off, thanks to everyone who has picked up a TENEMENT Bruised Music Volume One LP; we are all very excited by the feedback this singles collection has received.  All preorders shipped out earlier this month, and the first press of the LP is going fast. Luckily a ton of wonderful stores and distros have picked up copies so it should be pretty easy to get your hands on one.  Toxic Pop and I of course have a nice supply in our respective webstores, so feel free to grab a copy directly from us as well! We will have news on Bruised Music Volume Two in a few months, but just know that there will definitely be second volume of Bruised Music coming out, hopefully before 2015 is up.

Before I get to the webstore update, I also want to mention that we will have a proper announcement for the RED DEATH Permanent Exile LP this week.  Permanent Exile is officially out next month in time for their full US tour with THE FLEX from the UK! We've been keeping it under wraps for the most part while taking care of a few last minute arrangements, but now that everything has fallen into place we are ready to spill the details and give you a little taste of what's to come!

For those of you who have yet to check out DC's Red Death, Grave Mistake recently released the 7" of their 2014 demo, which is also currently available for order in the webstore. The limited clear vinyl has sadly sold out, however the regular version sounds great too! The demo tracks are also available for free download on both the Grave Mistake and Red Death Bandcamp.

That's it for now on the label front, here's the webstore update for you!

WHAT'S NEW for March 24, 2015:
http://store.gravemistakerecords.com/collections/new

As expected, a TON of new stuff has come out over the past couple of months (not to mention some older titles I'm just now getting my hands on) so rather than give a long winded recap, I'll keep this part short and just let you check the list below.  Some of my favorite releases over the past few months are in this batch,  like the Hardcore, Gimme Some More 7" comp on Beach Impediment (featuring S.H.I.T, IMPALERS, MERCENARY, and more), the latest single from the wonderful SUPERCRUSH, the full debut full length from WILDHONEY, a US pressing of the awesome debut EP from the UK's SHRAPNEL, and the debut single from Richmond's CHRISTI.

I also want to point out that this update has not one, but TWO new compilations as well as a book with the word "HARDCORE" in the title! Yep, we've got a few copies of the awesome and highly recommended NYHC: New York Hardcore 1980-1990 book by the wonderful Tony Rettman, as well as the AMERICA'S HARDCORE Vol. 3 LP compilation on Triple B which features some great current bands including hometown favorites BARGE, who are now in the process of finishing their debut LP for Grave Mistake (due out this summer). More on that later …

Finally, I got my hands on a couple of out of print Grave Mistake titles, including the WASTED TIME Futility LP, the VIOLENT ARREST Criminal Record 2x7", plus a couple of copies each of the BRAIN F So Dim single and WASTED TIME No Shore EP.  They are all new old stock recently returned from a distributor, and are available in the store now.

That's only the tip of the iceberg for this update; the full list is below. Thanks for reading and thanks for all of the support in 2015!

New in the Webstore for 03.24.15:

V/A "Hardcore: Gimme Some More" 7" (Beach Impediment Records)
HARDCORE: GIMME SOME MORE is a glimpse into a select few modern day practitioners of hardcore punk that reside within the continent of North America and are considered to be the cream of the crop by the primate in charge of Beach Impediment Records who is, coincidentally, responsible for putting this compilation together over the course of the past year and a half. Contained within this 7" record are exclusive tracks from S.H.I.T. (Toronto, ON), PEACEBREAKERS (Boston, MA), IMPALERS (Austin, TX), AJAX (NYC), VIOLENT END (Chicago, IL) and MERCENARY (Atlanta, GA) that you won't hear anywhere else. Each record comes in a pocket sleeve along with a fold out insert featuring art from each band.

SUPERCRUSH "I Don't Want to Be Sad Anymore" 7" (Painterman Records)
The 'Crush returns with a second single even more poppy than the first, with sugary sweet melodies, infectious hooks, and carefully crafted arrangements. Once again expertly recorded and mixed by Jackson Long at HMS Studios, each layer of euphonic guitar shimmer and candy-coated vocal harmony is afforded it's own space in the stereo field to bloom. At times bringing to mind the likes of Teenage Fanclub, Matthew Sweet, and others from the poppier side of the alternative rock explosion of the 1990's, Supercrush have delivered another tiny nugget of ear candy for us to savor on repeat until their next single hits the streets.

HOUNDS OF HATE "Hate Springs Eternal" LP (Braddock Hit Factory Records)
Hounds Of Hate is a four piece straightedge hardcore/punk band from Braddock, Pennsylvania who formed in 2010. Hounds Of Hate play a stripped down, no-frills, and venomous style of hardcore/punk. Hounds Of Hate have a strong 80's Boston vibe going on with their sound that calls to mind bands such as Slapshot, DYS, and The Freeze. Hate Springs Eternal is the band's second LP, which was released via Braddock Hit Factory. Hounds Of Hate is an absolute must listen for fans of Creem, The Boston Strangler, Prisoner Abuse, and Omegas.

LEATHER DADDY "S/T" 7" (Failure Recordings)
Debut 7" from one of Boston's best punk bands, Leather Daddy. 5 songs of menacing mid-paced hardcore, 2 of which are re-recordings (one from Sob Story, one from the Demo), and 3 brand new ones.

WILDHONEY "Sleep Through It" LP (Deranged Records)
WILDHONEY formed in late 2011, aiming to write pop songs with the energy and malcontent of hardcore punk, but without its entrenched masculinity. The five-piece has since become one of the loudest—and sweetest—bands in its hometown of Baltimore. Sleep Through It expands on two excellent 7-inches and one cassette EP, drawing influences from ‘60s girl groups, ‘80s post punk, indie pop, and shoegaze. New songs like first single "Fall In" showcase just how well Wildhoney combines wall-of-sound power with delicate passages and gorgeous vocal melodies. Older songs such as "Super Stupid" and "Seventeen" return on the LP, newly realized and sounding better than ever. Throughout the album, the group’s blasts of distortion and use of dense textures are balanced with beautiful pop tunes and chiming guitar work. The swirl of noise surrounding singer Lauren Shusterich’s voice is not unlike the best of the Cocteau Twins, or even Deerhunter, especially on the soaring title track. Sleep Through It was recorded at Beat Babies Studio in Woodstock, Md., with Chris Freeland (Lower Dens, Wye Oak). The album is Wildhoney’s first with synthesizers and features liberal amp and pedal experimentation. The recording process was intense and fast, cramming lots of work into a small amount of time. That hectic schedule is impossible to hear on the LP, which unravels at its own dreamy pace.

CHRISTI "Cry b/w Get You Off My Mind" 7" (Feel It Records)
Debut single from CHRISTI - a most excellent pairing of two addictive, hook-laden punk cuts from these Richmond ladies. CHRISTI draw from the powerful melodic approach of early punk groups like Protex and The Undertones, pairing that sound with the soulful haunt of 60’s favorites like the Shangri-Las. The result – a smooth, yet rugged and memorable single – a real “double A-side” if you will. There’s a certain finesse to these songs that few modern groups possess – be it the strong vocal hooks, well-penned guitar lines, or the pounding rhythm section (featuring a member of Richmond garage troglodytes The Ar-Kaics) – whatever “IT” may be, CHRISTI have it in spades. First pressing limited to 330 which includes a full-color glue pocket picture sleeve.

FURY "Kingdom Come" 7" (Triple B Records)
Fury come out of the gates with their highly-anticipated 7" "Kingdom Come." Playing Battery and early Turning Point-influenced hardcore.

SHRAPNEL "Frenzied State" 7" (US Version) (Triple B Records)
UKHC. Leeds' finest sons burst out with a demo that showcased UKHC via Breakdown '87 with English accents and proceeded to turn many heads. The new record goes down the route of Rest in Pieces, Leeway, Killing Time with the addition of Connor Hehir on second guitar. No doubt pits will be raged and conquered.

V/A "America's Hardcore Vol. 3" LP (Triple B Records)
Seventeen new and exclusive tracks from some of hardcore's best. Like the first two volumes, this comes with a badass, 12" x 12", 20-page, full-color insert booklet with pages designed by each band. Artists include Turnstile, Mammoth Grinder, Barge, Freedom, Clear, Criminal Instinct, Fury and more. LP includes digital download.

SENTENCED, THE "Out for Blood" 7" (Hardware Records)
Denton, Texas. Hippy stompin' Hardcore. Nuff said. 400 on black wax

SUNSHINE WARD "Demo E.P." 7" (Hardware Records)
New Boston Hardcore rager, taking influcenes from UK82, Totalitär and Japanese Hardcore. The band comprises 3/4 BRAIN KILLER personnel.

NARCOLEPTICS "S/T" 7" (Warthog Speak Records)
This six-track, thirteen-minute monster of a debut from NARCOLEPTICS is a relentless ass-whooping of blown out, nasty thrashing hardcore with some of the sickest drumming this side of "Is This My World," that in no way apes any specific style, trend, or formula, but nods to many.

SCALPED "S/T" 7" (Warthog Speak Records)
Following a promising demo tape, this SF bunch release a convincing 7-inch. You get muscular, inventive HC at its finest, sitting somewhere between 'Give Notice Of Nightmare' and 'Always The Hard Way'. For all intents and purposes, SCALPED is the continuation of YADOKAI, but replacing (the great) Daiki, with pop-darling TONY MOLINA on guitar.

VACANT STATE "Chains E.P." 7" (Warthog Speak Records)
New 5-songer from Canada's best hardcore band, this time with three mid-paced stompers and two faster burners. Saying that it reminds me of a more Oi!'d out LAST RIGHTS wouldn't be too far off the mark.

ANASAZI "Nasty Witch Rock" LP (Toxic State Records)
"Finally, after years of tremendous promise based on their live show, Anasazi have dropped their monolithic LP. The band's first two 7"s were solid and established them as one of the preeminent contemporary goth punk bands. Of course, that's not saying much considering the company, but those who saw them live knew they were something special. Finally, they've captured the magick perfectly on record with the help of Ben Greenberg and have now emerged as the best band of this style in the world. Aesthetic and sound only go so far, but Anasazi break from the pack with an unrivaled intensity and, most importantly, thoroughly-impressive songwriting. There's not much more to say about this band other than that this LP is completely essential, so don't sleep on this one."

SOMA COMA "Dust" LP
(Cool Death Records)
Latest in the Cool Death catalogue, SOMA COMA rip through eight tracks of unparalleled rage on this debut long player. At it's most basic "Dust" is a tightly wound hardcore record that goes straight for the throat, rarely cutting loose. Upon further listens, SOMA COMA reveal a bit more in the mix, from the feral rasp of the vocals to the atonal guitar flourishes reminiscent of groups like Die Kreuzen. As the title track winds side B to a close, SOMA COMA slowly turn things loose after a smashing ten plus minutes of HC abuse. Recommended to those familiar with the outer-spaced hardcore of recent Australian groups like Straightjacket Nation, Gutter Gods, and Velvet Whip. SOMA COMA's "Dust" will crush your basic sensibilities and then keep crawling back for another 'go. All orders include a Cool Death newsletter, sticker, and advert.

WARCRY "Needle Zero Drone II" 7" (Warcry Records)
This 2014 7" was originally only available from the band on tour but now has an official pressing. These three tracks are more fine-tuned, perfectly executed Discharge worship from a cast of characters known for work in bands like Tragedy, His Hero Is Gone and Talk Is Poison.

SACRIFICIO "Juventud Descerebrada" 7" (Cintas Pepe Records)
Yet another straight-forward hardcore banger from the angry streets of Mexico City, brought to you by the impeccable Cintas Pepe Records with a little help from SPHC.  Sacrificio carry similar songwriting skills as their contemporaries (Tercer Mundo, Muerte, etc), but have a shorter/faster/louder style of attack. Their hardcore is a bit more streamlined, more fast on the feet, the songs a bit more linear, the arrangements a bit more caustic. The end result is a record that feels fast and furious, out of control, while still feeling catchy and memorable, never blurring or rushing past you.

CADAVER EM TRANSE "S/T" LP (Nada Nada Discos)
Cadaver Em Transe is a four piece band from São Paulo, Brazil who formed in early 2013.  Cadaver Em Transe play a killer style of post punk, punk, and no wave style music.  Musically, the band's music is dark, tense, with a nervous/frenetic energy that pairs really well with the band's sound.  This is the band's debut eleven song LP, which was self-released by the band on August 29th, 2013.  Overall, these eleven songs make for a great listen and will definitely appeal to fans of Night Sins, The Faint, and The Bellicose Minds.  Highly recommended!

PILLAGE "S/T" 7" (Residue Records)
Not for the weak…Harsh and aggressive hardcore from Chicago. Nothing is pretty on this record, just pure anger. Excited for this to hit some punks… 8 fast aggro tracks that will make you want to break things. Features members of Punch in the Face, Los Crudos, HERDS, Sick/Tired, Divine Right… and a bunch of other bands you like too much.

DARK AGES "Vapor" LP (Sorry State Records)
When a hardcore band ventures beyond the 2-5 year lifespan typical of the genre they’re treading into largely uncharted territory, and as a result Dark Ages’ latest LP sounds like little in the canon of fast, 80s-inspired hardcore. Which isn’t to say that they’ve changed their approach; this is still fast, tight US hardcore inspired by the midwest classics, but after five years of woodshedding they’ve managed to excise anything that feels cliche, familiar, or obvious from these songs. Captured with an absolutely stunning, fully analogue recording, Vapor is that rare record that is at the same time visceral and cerebral, constantly surprising you while still making you want to mosh, circle pit, or whatever it is that you do. If you’re a huge fan of Articles of Faith’s Give Thanks LP or you wish that Die Kreuzen had recorded an LP that fused the energy of their first LP with the progressivism of October File, then let me introduce you to your new favorite record.

NO LOVE "Dogs//Wolves" 7"
(Sorry State Records)
Volume 2 of Sorry Stateäó»s North Carolina singles series brings the debut vinyl from Raleighäó»s No Love, featuring Sorry Stateäó»s own Daniel and Seth on dueling guitars. Recorded during the same session as their recent Tape #2 release on Sorry State, these two songs represent the cream of that fertile crop. Forget garage, d-beat, KBD, and all of your other retro micro-genres, No Love play capital P Punk a la bands like the Avengers, the Buzzcocks, and the Bags. In other words, this is the music that made you fall in love with punk in the first place. Limited to a one-time pressing of 250 copies.

COLTRANES, THE "The Cat of Nine Tails" 7"
(SPHC Records)
How does one describe the Coltranes? They are a band that has routinely defied categorization, making the scene scratch our collective head while curling into a half smile and making a contented "hum". We struggled to think of what we could compare their first few LPs to. But why expend the effort? We know how the music makes us feel: freaky, dirty, deranged, cynical. We know how the music presents itself to us: unhinged, uncompromising, unpredictable, ugly.  Each of the first three LPs found the Coltranes streamlining their style, becoming less moody and more aggressive, less dynamic and more noisy, less dark and more ugly. This EP continues with this trend, being the band's most immediate, rocking, and discordant work yet. Perhaps this is some melting pot of USHC and 90's noise rock influences.....but I prefer to just think of it as "freak music, by freaks, for freaks".  You may remember these songs from their 2014 tour tape, please enjoy them on a one-time pressing 7" vinyl record.

CUNTZ "Cooked" 7" (Total Punk Records)
CUNTZ are the kind of guys who don't make deadlines. The kind of guys who come to your party, drink all your beer, and spend the rest of the night following your girlfriend around. A bunch of no good bogans, or to be more concise a bunch of CUNTZ. After knocking our socks off at last year's Goner Fest we asked them to do a single. This thing has been over a year in the making and well worth the wait. Cuntz give us two more tracks of their signature drug soaked thug punk, covered in scuzz and with the sardonic ramblings of a madman screamed over top of it. 100% TOTAL PUNK.

MIDNITE SNAXX "Don't Wake Me Up" 7" (Total Punk Records)
Following the release of three sold out singles, and an LP on Red Lounge Records, the Snaxxx have been pretty quite this last year and a half.  Don't let their silence fool you.  They haven't lost a step, and come kicking back onto the scene with two short blasts that let you know they've spent the downtime sharpening their sweet tooth. The pop hooks are still front and center, but are backed up with a much meaner and tighter punch than when we last checked in with them.  B side is a killer cover of The Enemy's 'Pull Down The Shades'. 100% TOTAL PUNK

POST TEENS / ROSE CROSS Split 7" (Dead Tank Records)
Post Teens are a Gainesville, Fla based band featuring members of Asshole Parade, Torche, Averkiou, and Dead Friends. Post Teens play a great style of music that’s aggressive, blown out, fuzzed out, and catchy as hell.. The band tears through their latest song with reckless abandon in a manner that would have made the Mummies proud. The best way for me to describe Post Teens’ music would be to picture garage punk bands such as Obits, Hot Snakes, Night Owls, and Marked Men mixed with the snottiness and swagger of bands like The Fallouts or maybe even Rocket From The Crypt. The second band on the split is a band I was completely unfamiliar with until this split. Rose Cross is a killer female fronted garage punk band from Gainesville , Florida. Fans of Terrible Feelings, White Lung, and Brain F will not be disappointed by Rose Cross’s on their side of this split. Overall, an amazing split that should not be missed. Highly recommended!

CRIME DESIRE "Your Power" LP (Standards Records)
Strictly under the influence of 80’s international hardcore, Crime Desire’s latest LP, Your Power, is an 11 track, unrelenting aural hellstorm. Taking cues from UK hardcore incendiaries such as Icons of Filth, Antisect and the like, the blazing thrash of Japan’s Selfish Records/burning spirits camp, and the infectious songwriting of fellow statesmen Battalion of Saints and Crucifix, Your Power is an homage to the worldwide hardcore styles of yore that always retains its own identity and pushes forward. Over four years in the making, following two 12” EPs, Crime Desire didn’t want to commit to a full length until everything—the songs, the recording, the artwork, lyrics—were exactly where they needed to be, and the overall quality control on Your Power will not disappoint. Recorded to tape for analogue purists, the sequencing, run time, mastering, and overall presentation were all subject to the highest scrutiny, resulting in an album that’s a cohesive statement, rather than a haphazard collection of songs. If you’re looking for an 80’s style hardcore album that goes beyond the same retread, generic sound, this one’s for you.

CRIME DESIRE "Alone in a Dream" LP (Gravity Records)
Crime Desire's new five song 12" EP "Alone In A Dream" marks a further step in the straight forward, gruff vocalled, riff driven hardcore punk direction the band took on their "Every Day In Chains" EP. With clear nods to Discharge, Antisect and Celtic Frost, coupled with a healthy dose of 80's death rock, "Alone In A Dream" will prove to be a revelation for those who appreciate traditional hardcore with a darker atmosphere. Contributing in no small part to said atmosphere is the guest vocals of Gitane Demone, whose legendary wails graced a bulk of Christian Death's catalogue, and her daughter Zara, who plays in Gitane's newest outing, the Crystelles. Analog purists will also be pleased to note that "Alone In A Dream" was recorded to tape and mastered to vinyl straight from the reels with care and attention by the fine people at Chicago Mastering Service, creating a warm, earthy sanctuary from the "loudness wars" madness of the digital media era. Crime Desire has a history of going to great lengths to create hardcore records which are as idiosyncratic as they are abrasive, of which "Alone In A Dream" is their latest and greatest excursion.

CRIME DESIRE "Every Day … In Chains" LP
(Gravity Records)
Crime Desire's "Every Day in Chains" is a four song 12" ep of dark, blistering hardcore, seething with social contempt and morbid imagery. Building off the foundation of the band's 2008 Samhain/Amebix/death rock influenced self-titled lp, Crime Desire injects a dose of 80's UK hardcore into their sound, taking cues from groups like English Dogs and Antisect, giving their trudging, brooding songs a sense of urgency and adrenaline while maintaining a dark atmosphere. Recorded at Big Fish studios and mastered at Chicago Mastering Service, Crime Desire put care into every step of putting their music out on vinyl, and their efforts were not wasted, as "Every Day...In Chains" is truly a sonically devastating work.

MIND SPIDERS "S/T" LP
(Dirtnap Records)
Around the time Denton, TX legends Marked Men were entering into their current state of semi- hibernation, co-singer/songwriter/ guitarist Mark Ryan decided he wanted to go in a slightly different direction for his next project, with recordings handled mostly by himself, and a fluid lineup of musicians to back him live. After an extremely well received 7" on Dirtnap (released before the live version of the band had played a single show), Mind Spiders follow it up with a full length that doesn't begin to disappoint. Intelligent, highly crafted songwriting with lots of twists and turns, meticulously recorded at home with Mark himself playing most of the instruments. Pop with brains and substance, catchy stuff that isn't afraid to spread out a bit and reflect a wide range of influences and interests. A little 60's pop here, a little lo-fi there, a little weirdo-in-his-bedroom-with-a-4-track in other places. And if the opening song, Go!, sounds a bit like the Marked Men, that's because that band recorded a version of it for their last LP, which was left off at the last minute.

MISFITS "Famous Misfits of Filmland" 7" (Fanclub Pressing)
Fanclub release

MISFITS "Spook City U.S.A" 7" (Fanclub Pressing)
Good quality boot of the (then rare) studio tracks of the above lesser-acknowledged 'fits songs.

SCREAMERS "Demos 1977-78" LP
(Fanclub Pressing)
Recorded LIVE in one session in Summer 1978 on a 4-track. Produced By Geza X. The ideal intro to the Screamers. Arguably the best Synth-Punk ever.

COUNTDOWN TO OBLIVION "Discography" LP (A389 Records)
Toronto, Canada's COUNTDOWN TO OBLIVION were a short-lived Toronto hardcore 'supergroup' featuring Chris Colohan (Left For Dead/The Swarm/Cursed/Burning Love) alongside members of One Blood, Legion DCLXVI, Rammer and Brutal Knights.  The band played a vicous hybrid of metallic hardcore highlighted by dual vocals and awesome At The Gates/Slayer style guitar riffs.  This collection compile's CTO's entire recorded ouput including the 'Death Rattle' cassette, 'Brain Surgery For Beginners' 7" and split ep with They Live.  Comes packaged in a gatefold cover with tons of photos, flyers and liner notes.

IRON REAGAN "Spoiled Identity" LP
(A389 Records)
Originally only available as a Decibel Magazine flexi, this sought-after IRON REAGAN EP is finally back in print with 2 previously unreleased bonus tracks and screen-printed artwork on the B-side!  13 tracks of no-filler, zero-bullshit thrashing punk/hardcore featuring members of Municipal Waste, Darkest Hour and Mammoth Grinder.

IRON REAGAN "Worse Than Dead" LP (
A389 Records)
Hailing from Richmond, VA, IRON REAGAN are a new band featuring members of Municipal Waste/Darkest Hour.  'Worse Than Dead' is the band's debut nineteen track LP loaded with high energy crossover with the focus put on hardcore rather than the thrash you know/love their other bands for.   Comes with awesome retro-style pen/ink artwork by Brent Eyestone.

NOISEM "Consumed" 7"
(A389 Records)
NOISEM exploded onto the metal world last year with their incredible 'Agony Defined' LP loaded with nine tracks of legit death/thrash crossover with 0% pretense.  Followed up with a year of solid touring (alongside Carcass, The Black Dahlia Murder and Ringworm to name a few) the band found some time to record a few singles to hold things over until their new LP drops in 2015.  This 7" features a brand new song 'Consuming' on Side A with special surprises on the flipside!

NOTHING "Downward Years to Come" 12" (A389 Records)
On their third release, Philadelphia's NOTHING orchestrate a dense symphony with guitars and keyboards drenched in reverb and haunting vocal melodies. If you seek retro alt/shoegaze executed to perfection, look no further. Your dream band is here.

SICK/TIRED "Dissolution" LP (
A389 Records)
After two LPs and a slew of brutal 7" releases, Chicago's hardcore/grind mainstays SICK/TIRED return with their 3rd LP and most brutal offering to date.  Pushed to the sonic limit with mixing/mastering by Developing Nations/Audiosiege, this record has everything you'd want from a new S/T record and more!

BRAIN F "So Dim" 7" (Grave Mistake Records)
Deadstock copies of this out of print single! North Carolina’s BRAIN F≠ bring you their second single; “SO DIM” b/w “SYMPTOM SET” is a double A-sided banger with all the overdriven/overloaded guitar fury of TEENGENERATE or ZERO BOYS and the angry female-fronted charm you love from so many DANGERHOUSE & early L.A. singles. Massive rhythm section a la AVENGERS and NERVOUS EATERS, hook-filled & danceable, the hardest of core. Hostile, angry fun - the perfect follow up to their debut 7" on Static Shock (UK)

DEEP SLEEP "You're Screwed" 7"
(Grave Mistake Records)
Found some of the last copies of this out of print 7"! Nine song debut EP from Baltimore's DEEP SLEEP. Prepare yourself for a nonstop barrage of raw, spiteful, in your face hardcore punk rock. Loaded with enough infectious hooks to keep you singing along from start to finish, while packing enough punch to knock you straight on your ass at the same time. Imagine what the DESCENDENTS would sound like if they were a city like Baltimore, and not Southern California.

VIOLENT ARREST "Criminal Record" 2x7" (Grave Mistake Records)
Deadstock copies of this out of print double ripper! The UK's VIOLENT ARREST return with twelve brand new raging hardcore blasts on two 45 rpm 7"s! Refusing to let up one bit from their first two releases on Deranged, V.A. continues to pummel you from start to finish with their savage brand of early US-by-the-way-of-UK hardcore. If spending the last two decades in classic UK bands like HERESY, RIPCORD, DUMBSTRUCK, and SPITE (to name a few) wasn't testament enough to these lads' abilities, CRIMINAL RECORD proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that these hardcore vets can still rip it up with the best of them. Split release with NO WAY RECORDS.

WASTED TIME "Futility" LP (Grave Mistake Records)
Deadstock copies of this out of print LP! After two killer EPs, Richmond's WASTED TIME finally unleash their first devastating full length, FUTILITY. On this LP, WASTED TIME continue to deliver their trademark hard-as-nails brand of US hardcore. With the expansion of the band to a five piece, FUTILITY also finds the band drawing from additional influences, resulting in a more massive and ferocious sound than their previous releases.

WASTED TIME "No Shore" 7" (Grave Mistake Records)
Deadstock copies of this long out of print 7"! Back with a second E.P.!!! This time around these Richmond boys (with the addition of Brandon from Government Warning taking over drum duties) crank it up about ten notches from their debut E.P., assaulting your ears with seven blasts of angry, violent raging fast hardcore. The early raw USHC influence (some POISON IDEA, NA, and SSD) is definitely still very much there, but WASTED TIME have added a few surprises. Be warned ... this record might just get up in the middle of the night and kill you in your sleep.

BLACKBALL Demo Tape
No bullshit hardcore punk from Raleigh featuring members of Mercy Killings, Stripmines, Skemata, and Burn/Ward.

COMING DOWN Demo Tape
Debut demo release from Rochester, New York's Coming Down, who play a late '80s DC style of hardcore akin to Swiz, Embrace, etc. Featuring members of Soul Control, Government Warning, Wasted Time, and more.

KOMMUNION Demo Tape
Four songs of fast, steamrolling and surprisingly catchy d-beat hardcore from Richmond, VA featuring some freaks also known for their participation in Barge, No Tomorrow, Cold Lovers and Last Words. Self-recorded.

LACERATIONS Demo Tape
"Ripper of a demo from this band out of Dallas, This sounds like it could have been an early release on Sorry State or No Way. It has that catchy, slightly metallic riffing of bands like Direct Control... it sounds like the band has listened to lots of stuff like Dr. Know, Attitude Adjustment, RKL, and other bands that fall on the slightly more metallic end of the 80s USHC spectrum. The songwriting is great and the production is nice and raw... I know that this sound is a little out of vogue at the moment, but if you're still keeping the flame this demo is top-notch." - sorrystaterecords

RUBBISH "American Hardcore" Demo Tape

New hardcore from half of Mauser and some other dumbasses. Hear here: www.rubbishboys.bandcamp.com

NYHC: New York Hardcore 1980–1990, by Tony Rettman
Known for its glamorous 1970s punk rock scene, New York City matched the grim urban reality of the 1980s with a rawer musical uprising: New York hardcore. As bands of misfits from across the region gravitated to the forgotten frontier of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. With a a backdrop of despair, bands like Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, Murphy’s Law, and Youth of Today confronted their reality with relentlessly energetic gigs at CBGB, A7, and the numerous squats in the area.  Tony Rettman’s ambitious oral history captures ten years of struggle, including the scene’s regional rivalries with D.C. and Boston, the birth of moshing, the clash and coming to terms of hardcore and heavy metal, the straightedge movement, and the unlikely influence of Krishna consciousness.  With a foreword by Freddy Cricien of Madball, who made his stage debut with Agnostic Front at age 7, NYHC slams the sidewalk with savage tales of larger-than-life characters and unlikely feats of willpower. The gripping and sometimes hilarious narrative is woven together like the fabric of New York itself from over 100 original interviews with members of every NY punk and hardcore band you can imagine!

SUB POP U.S.A.: The Subterranean Pop Music Anthology, 1980–1988, by Bruce Pavitt
The Sub Pop zine puzzled punk and new wave fans from major cities; readers were surprised that there were enough bands in the forgotten cities and states to devote a column, let alone an entire fanzine. Even more puzzling was the exclusion of artists like the Clash, Gang of Four, Blondie, or PIL, solely because of their major label associations. Driven by the power of independent thinking, early issues featured impassioned rallying cries for local action that make more sense than ever today, alongside early published artwork by Linda Barry, Charles Burns, and Jad Fair.  In 1983, Pavitt moved to Seattle and commenced his widely-read Sub Pop USA column in the Rocket newspaper, each month exposing new underground and independent artists. From Beat Happening and Pell Mell to early records by the Beastie Boys, Metallica, and Run-D.M.C., Sub Pop was a 1980s independent music bible, written with a diverse appreciation for happening scenes across the USA. In 1986, Pavitt put his ideas into practice, launching Sub Pop Records with the historic Sub Pop 100 compilation and Soundgarden’s first release, Screaming Life. While the Sub Pop Records legacy is today legendary, the groundwork and creative wellspring that put Seattle on the musical map is assembled here for the first time.

TOUCH AND GO: The Complete Hardcore Punk Zine ’79–’83, by Tesco Vee and Dave Stimson
Touch and Go fanzine was the brainchild of Tesco Vee and Dave Stimson and was launched in Lansing, Michigan, in 1979. Major fanatics of the new punk happenings in the late ’70s, TV and DS set out to chronicle, lambaste, ridicule, and heap praise on all they arbitrarily loved or hated in the music communities in the US and abroad.  In laughably minuscule press runs by today’s standards, T & G was made by guys within the Midwest scene strictly for the edification of scenesters and pals in other cities like DC, Philly, Boston, LA, SF, Chicago, et al. Inspired by magazines such as Slash and Search and Destroy and writers like Claude Bessy and Chris Desjardines, TV and DS pumped out seventeen naughty, irreverent issues together, and TV did another five solo.  Magazines like Forced Exposure and Your Flesh, among others, soon fired up Xerox machines themselves, and the rest is history. So is the legendary independent record label launched from this zine, and so are the bands covered inside: Black Flag, Minor Threat, the Misfits, Negative Approach, the Fix, the Avengers, the Necros, Discharge, Iron Cross, Youth Brigade, Faith, Die Kreuzen, Crucifix, Poison Idea—and all the other punks worth their weight in glorious black and white.

WE GOT POWER!: Hardcore Punk Scenes From 1980s Southern California, by David Markey and Jordan Schwartz

In 1979, punk was over… but by 1981, hardcore was born.  As teenagers in 1981, David Markey and his best friend Jordan Schwartz founded We Got Power, a fanzine dedicated to the first-generation hardcore punk music community in their native Los Angeles. Their text and cameras captured the early punk spirit of Black Flag, the Minutemen, Social Distortion, Red Cross/Redd Kross, Suicidal Tendencies, the Descendents, White Flag, the Last, the Gun Club, Saccharine Trust, Sin 34, Nip Drivers, Circle One, M.D.C., Big Boys, Youth Brigade, D.R.I., the Butthole Surfers, Firehose, and many others at the height of their precocious punk powers.  In the process, the duo’s amazing photographs also captured the dilapidated suburbs, abandoned storefronts, and dereliction of the early Reagan era—a rubble-strewn social apocalypse that demanded a youth uprising! Never before seen except in crude fanzine form, these detailed and richly narrative photos are now collected to present an intimate portrayal of a uniquely fertile creative moment.  Featuring essays by David Markey, Jordan Schwartz, Jennifer Schwartz, Henry Rollins, Keith Morris, Chuck Dukowski, Dez Cadena, Louiche Mayorga, Cameron Jamie, Pat Fear, Steve Humann, Tony Adolescent, Jack Brewer, Jula Bell, Mike Watt, Sean Wheeler, Joe Carducci, Daniel “Shredder” Weizmann, and Janet Housden. Presenting nearly 400 first-generation L.A. hardcore punk photographs. Including complete color reprints of We Got Power fanzine 1981–1983 and beyond.

MAXIMUMROCKNROLL #382 - March 2015

Maximum Rocknroll #382, the March 2015 issue, features our annual Year-End Top Tens! MRR reviewers, columnists, and coordinators get to have their say about their favorite records, tapes, and zines of 2014. As always, we asked some of our friends to contribute lists too—see what Ralph from Not Normal Records and Tapes, Paco from La Vida Es Un Mus, Laura from RAKTA, Ben from Nuts!, and many more have to say about the records they consumed and were consumed by last year. Martin Sorrondeguy sat down with legendary SST producer Spot to talk about his recent photo book, new MRR Coordinator Grace interviewed NYHC rippers IN SCHOOL, and former MRR Coordinator Golnar Nikpour had a conversation with Leatherfist, Shit Zoo, Tilted HC, and Chelsea of PIG DNA. The little piggies also designed our cheeky cover (how many times can you spot the word “fucker”?). Plus, we’ve got a scene report from Grenoble, France: punk mecca tucked into the Alps! We have all the columnists you love to hate, including a new monthly column from Colin Atrophy of Slice Harvester zine and a contribution from hacker/whistleblower Jeremy Hammond writing from federal prison; and as always the most extensive punk record review section in print.
