As you may or may not have heard by now, Brandon Ferrell (Direct Control, Government Warning, Wasted Time, half of No Way Records) passed on unexpectedly last week, leaving his wife Lauren and two children, Darby and Zoe, in a situation that no one should have to deal with. In lieu of this, to help raise funds for those the most affected by this, some good friends and bands have come together to organize a benefit show here in Richmond in August. The following bands will be playing to aid Lauren and her children in their greatest time of need:
August 6, 2016
Hardywood Park Craft Brewery
Richmond, VA
MUNICIPAL WASTE
CAREER SUICIDE
DOUBLE NEGATIVE
CAUSTIC CHRIST
NIGHT BIRDS
BLOOD PRESSURE
Tickets are available online, and more information on the benefit show can be found on the Facebook Event.
If you cannot make it to this show, but still would like to help out in some way, there has been a Gofundme set up for the family as well. The support so far has been overwhelming and incredible to see, and if you have already been able to contribute or share the page then that is greatly appreciated. Donations are still highly encouraged, so if you can help them out at all it would be awesome.
I apologize if this news / update comes off as a bit impersonal considering the circumstances - the past few weeks have been somewhat difficult to process for me (to say the least) so I don't really have much to say publicly on the matter aside from my thoughts and support are with the family and loved ones, and I encourage anyone touched by his life or his passing, whether you knew Brandon personally or were simply a fan of any of his musical endeavors, to please keep Lauren, Darby, and Zoe in your thoughts.
Now, in an attempt to segue from this into talking about new records, Daniel Sorry State said it best (as he always does) in his update last week:
"… there was no thing that defined Brandon more than his enthusiasm for music. So let's talk about punk…"
For quick browsing of recent additions to the store, you can check out all of these titles mentioned below in the New Arrivals and Recent Restocks sections!
As you might expect, the first thing I'm going to mention are all
of the incredible new releases from La Vida Es Un Mus this month - we've
got new releases from Rixe, Blazing Eye, Lumpy and the Dumpers, Barcelona, and Primetime - ALL of them are highly recommended, but that should go without saying!
Another favorite in this update is the second full length from Baltimore's Angel Du$t - Grave Mistake was lucky enough to release the Upside Down
7" single from this LP a few months back (which we still have a few
remaining copies of), and it's great to finally have the album available
in it's entirety. Our copies are on the limited White Vinyl so do
yourself a favor and scoop this one up if you haven't yet. Other new
distro titles of note include the Sunshine Ward LP on Feral Ward, the new Vaaska 7", Nandas 7", Eightball 7", the final Mindset 7", the US pressing of the new Red Dons LP (as well as a couple other new Deranged Records titles), new Rakta 7", new Praise 12", and much more.
Stacks and stacks of tapes came in this past month as well - we've got some great new demos from the likes of Combined Effort, Enamel, Pure Pressure, Memory Loss, and Outshined to name a few, as well as some cool collection tapes from Cal and the Calories and Generacion Suicida.
That's not even all of it, and the full list is below, so I'm gonna
end it here and let you check out the rest for yourself. As always
thanks for reading and for the continued support! A few new Grave
Mistake releases are on the horizon, so we'll have some news on those
shortly!

BLAZING EYE "Lonely Corpse (UK Press)" 7" (La Vida Es Un Mus Records)
LA's BLAZING EYE return with two new tracks of devilish hardcore punk in the vein of MOBS or ZOUO. The Japanese hardcore influence is prevalent on "Brain" which has an infectious guitar riff- vocal scream dynamic punctuated by a perfect Bristol Beat which will have you screaming like a bloody mess without you even noticing. "Lonely Corpse" on the flip has a stomp dirgy beat perfect to dance like a worm on a devastated city ran by cyborgs. A perfect punk single with two really catchy and memorable songs which show blazing eye at the top of their game.
LUMPY AND THE DUMPERS "Huff My Sack (UK Press)" LP (La Vida Es Un Mus Records)
St Louis Lumpy and the Dumpers delivers their first mini album, after a string of seven inches and tapes which gained them worldwide recognition among the hordes of misfits lovers of slimy bad punk musik. Nine tracks of snotty punk driven by one of the crudest guitars tones heard by these ears in a long time. The songs flow seamlessly, the lyrics are sharp and full of vile and stick in your brain like any classic punk should. The album includes their own classic take on 'Loony' the B-Side of the 1978 by Slime from London which feels both a statement and a re-appropiation of a song which could have easily being written by the Dumpers if it hadn't existed. In fewer words this is a magnificent gross record. The record comes housed in a sleeve designed by Lumpy himself carrying their signature aesthetic.
RIXE "Les Nerfs A Vif" 7" (La Vida Es Un Mus Records)
Just over a year since the release of the much loved debut 7" 'Coups Et Blessures', RIXE return with another four tracker on La Vida Es Un Mus. RIXE have gone from total obscurity to headlining festivals and gigs in Canada, North America and England and these four new tracks are a clear reason why. Standout 'Hexagone' opens the EP sounding like 'New Age' era BLITZ with extra bite and bile, 'A Contre-Courant' follows with a stomping primitive bass and drum attack before the razor sharp guitar work and growling vocals come in. On the flip the venom and intensity continues with 'Rapport de force' before the self titled track 'Rixe' ends this latest Oi! attack with a track that starts like a late 70's UK SUBS hit before heading into classic 80's French Oi!. RIXE are special and these four tracks show more reasons why.
BARCELONA "Pueden Ser Ellos" 7" (La Vida Es Un Mus Records)
BARCELONA's follow up to their gigantic "Extremo Nihilismo En Barcelona" is another piece of ugly hardcore which sounds just as violently raw and unhinged as their debut. The four tracks on this 7" follow the template of no
PRIMETIME "Going Places" 7" (La Vida Es Un Mus Records)
Primetime return with their second EP 'Going Places' on La Vida Es un Mus. A four track EP of juvenile Joie de vivre. Each of the four tracks ooze sass, nonchalance and that special ingredient - songs that demand repeat listens. Standout track is 'Pervert' which is one minute and 56 seconds of post punk perfection which would happily sit on Rough Trade's seminal 1980 compilation 'Wanna Buy a Bridge' in between Kleenex, Swell Maps and The Raincoats. You will not find something as instant and essential in 2016 (Sean Forbes) Sleeve designed by the band reflecting precisely what you'll find inside the package. Includes download code.
SUNSHINE WARD "Order" LP (Feral Ward Records)
Sunshine Ward is Boston Hardcore by way of Totalitar and Chaos UK. Follow up to their noisy as fuck demo EP, this 10 song LP is straight forward hardcore punk. Less pedals, more hardcore. Pogo and mosh. Hard as piss. Flip a cop car. Members of Brain Killer and Exit Order.
UNA BESTIA INCONTROLABLE "10-11-12 Demo" LP (La Vida Es Un Mus Records)
UNA BÈSTIA INCONTROLABLE was born in 2012 as a side project with members of GLAM, DESTINO FINAL and CROSTA. They got wind of GLAM playing a show in London and decided to jump on the bill. They got a set together and recorded it in a rush to have some tapes to sell as said show. The tape recorded mere weeks after the band's inception remains an extremely powerful recording that only 100 lucky people managed to get on its original format. It shows the band as its rawest, pushing the limits of their previous bands as far as possible and setting the mood for what "Observant Com El Mon Es Destrueix " LP would be. 10-11-12 comes housed in a 12 panel poster similar to the ones CRASS records made popular in the 80s with artwork by Guillem El Muro and Oriol Roca.
ANGEL DU$T "Rock the Fuck on Forever" LP (Pop Wig Records)
ANGEL DU$T has been a band for like 3 or 5 years or something. Hailing from the city of Baltimore, these guys don’t fuck around when it comes to making rock music. You like the Lemonheads and the Bad Brains at the same time? Of course you do. This is kind of like that, but less heroin involved. Rock The Fuck On Forever isn’t just the name of their new LP, it’s a fucking command. If you want nothing more in life than to rock your stupid ass off, then do yourself a favor and pick this shit up straight from POP WIG records. The band also has some other records but this one is way better than that old bull- shit. This record was recorded and produced by Will Yip, who did Title Fight, Citizen, and Circa Survive. I bet he sang on it too or something. He also did the Turnover record that I know you all fuck with. This shit rocks hard as fuck. If you’re still a virgin this record will make you not one.
VAASKA "Futuro Primitivo" 7" (Beach Impediment Records)
Rejoice, VAASKA have returned with more hard punk pounders for the masses! Originally pressed in a limited amount by VOX POPULI for the band's Japanese tour in the winter of 2016, Beach Impediment is delighted to make the latest release from Austin's finest available domestically for the hardcore punk fanatics that know the real deal and for those that would like to become more educated in the field. "FUTURO PRIMITIVO" features five tracks of the top notch D-Beat punk with blazing guitar leads and ferociously belted out lyrics in Spanish that you have come to expect from these guys over the years. Each record comes in a felt based glue pocket sleeve adorned with the stark black and white art of the great Brian Miller that has been the band's visual trademark since the beginning. Limited to a one time pressing of 500 copies.
NANDAS "S/T" 7" (Toxic State Records)
NANDAS from here in NYC's long awaited debut EP released by TOXIC STATE RECORDS. NANDAS intertwine ghastly melodies with barbaric stomps remind me of Nog Watt and RP. Anahit's lyrics are elegantly horrifying. This record is more black rabbit hole than than piece of wax. A dreadful doorway to the Nanda realm.
MINDSET "Nothing Less" 7" (React Records)
In the tradition of the valedictory three-song 7”, inaugurated by Youth of Today’s 1989 sendoff, Disengage, Mindset have in the earliest days of 2016 staked a claim on record of the year with a farewell triptych of their own: Nothing Less. A densely packed charge of pure explosive energy, the record — like one of Mindset’s peerless live sets — arrives with astonishing force, shows us something we’ve never seen before, and is suddenly over: A vanishing show of force and barely controlled chaos that awes, exhilarates, and inspires — and lives forever in memory. The new music, backed by the best-in-the-business drumming of Daniel Fang, delivers all the speed, crunch and crescendo that made Mindset’s full-length LP, Leave No Doubt, a generational document. And the lyrics, as urgent and authoritative as ever, rise to the occasion of a last will and testament: reflective, free of regret and apology, and more wrenchingly personal than ever before. Mindset will soon be gone, but with Nothing Less they have defied us to forget them.
EIGHTBALL "S/T" 7" (Warthog Speak Records)
Seven-track debut EP of D-beat Hardcore Rock'n'Roll TRASH from Pacific Northwest cretins of distortion. The 7" features the three demo tracks plus four more. Sporting members of GAG, WHITE WARDS, COMBAT KNIFE, BRICKLAYER, LOWER SPECIES for those of you with a score card.
NO PAROLE "Violent Thoughts" 7" (Longshot Music)
This is the sophomore release from this hardcore and punk influenced bunch of bootboys that are doing justice to the genre of “American Oi!” finally! On this 7” EP there are 6 blistering tracks that are raw and uncompromising with gruff vocals backed up by a somewhat contrasting smooth and at times melodic guitar and bass with machine gun drumming throughout.
RAKTA "Intencao / A Busca do Circulo" 7" (Nada Nada Discos)
Two songs recorded in Barcelona, right after their three month tour across the north hemisphere. Expect the same moody, melancholic drips of SIOUSXIE / X MAL DEUTSCHLAND / KILLING JOKE-esque darkness that you loved from their LP.
PESSIMISTS, THE "Six Songs" 7" (Nada Nada Discos)
Kinda punk, kinda post-punk, kinda garagey stuff from members if RAKTA, FUTURO, and GARAGE FUZZ. Dunno what else to say other than "listen to it below."
MAGIC CIRCLE "Journey Blind" LP (20 Buck Spin Records)
Who said anything about running out of ideas? The stubborn ones were born to linger, to nose out newer, more subtle permutations with the help from a few ragged fucks willing to practice them. Magic Circle mutt roll in Heavy Metal whatness, striking a balance with the pituitary culture it begat, and the tunes it jacked out. Suburban drag races. Basement bum wine scrum. Every collective thought burnt into a dirty tape dub of Mob Rules. Sabbath, especially in its later incarnations, hulks ephemerally among all openings, rests, and codas. When Chris Corry and Dan Ducas’ guitars aren’t jelly-legging around Iommi, they’re rekindling “Neon Knights,” brandishing “Die Young” credo. Meanwhile, Q clubs the kit like a drunken Ginger Baker. Brendan Radigan stakes big, black flag in vocal territory long occupied by Saint Vitus, Saxon, Armored Saint, and Trouble. Bassist Justin DeTore alternates creepy crawl and thunder word belch, laying yoke over each tune and driving them predjudicially underground. But motherfuck simply “sounding” like these bands. Magic Circle celebrates them, and in doing so honors the form they have found. It’s Heavy Metal. Hit hard. Write riffs that clack along like rustbucket tanks into perpetuity. “Play” bass in ways that make you at once inseperable from every punch the drummer lands, and also ghosts every riff---working beneath, between, behind the rhythm. Sing that fucking story as every ancient did their Homer. It means something. It stands for something. Bring that to the tape. And so Magic Circle does. Tunes are rude, vicious. Some lumber ominously along, bare-fisting the downbeat through riffs risen from basements held in the odors of stale beer, mold, and want. Others stuff the song’s shape with directional changes---tipping a cap to Trouble and Saint Vitus via Sabbath. All the dots are easily connected. There’s no sport there. But, in lieu of refinement, we get an honest reckoning: Magic Circle is a band (quickly) becoming. Through the web of influence and itchy, artistic compulsion they’ve found savage and ultimately promising ways of reanimating long since taxidermied forms.
YOSHIHIRO HIRAOKA & HUMAN ARTS "Shogakara Taigae" LP (Kick Rock Records)
Official repress of this not-so-known record but super classic of Japanese Hardcore. Led by Yoshihiro Hiraoka (Poison, Poison Arts) on vocals, this short time run project from 1992 includes the almighty Hiroyuki Kishida, best-known as Chelsea (Death Side, Paintbox, Poison Arts, The Execute) on guitar, Minoru (Lip Cream, The Comes, Colored Ricemen, EIEFITS) on bass and Eiji (Me ss) on drums. So you know what to expect, some super catchy melodic and metallic hardcore punk from some of the best punkers in the Burning Spirits scene. Originally released by Slice Records in 1992.
PRAISE "Leave It All Behind" LP (React Records)
While the genre of hardcore most often brings to mind aggressive, chaotic live shows and blistering sonic intensity, some of most promising output from those within the hardcore scene has been created when these musicians strive for something more melodic. Just as Youth of Today evolved into Shelter, 7 Seconds expanded their sound over time, and Minor Threat gave way to Dag Nasty and Embrace, an experienced group of hardcore diehards have come together to form Praise. The band steps in a more melodic direction than the notable list of other bands they've spent time in, especially evident on their newest offering, "Leave It All Behind." Now, with a slightly modified line-up and renewed enthusiasm for their unique brand of melodic hardcore, Praise have created their most interesting release to date. Entitled "Leave It All Behind," this seven song EP marks a decidedly more tuneful tendency and exhibits a strength of songwriting that only comes from playing together for all these years. Where their previous releases felt indicative of their origins, this EP undeniably feels like something fresh and exciting.
SICK THOUGHTS "18 & Free" 7" (Total Punk Records)
It's finally happened! Total Punk and Drew Owen together at last. America's shittiest teenager and America's shittiest looking record label have joined forces to give you the single of the year. I was in the "he's putting out too many records" camp, but if he can keep knocking out songs like "18 & Free" and the b side "Choose Death" then you will hear no more complaints from this guy. "18 & Free" is an instant punk classic. 100% TOTAL PUNK
GINO & THE GOONS "Love & Hate" 7" (Total Punk Records)
We're happy to bring Gino & The Goons back into the fold. Since last we've seen them they've put out two records on Slovenly, another single on Pelican Pow Wow, toured Europe, and even have a Japanese pressing of their "Shake It" LP coming out. Don't worry though all the fame and fortune hasn't gone to their heads, and they haven't reached a level that could be confused with sophisticated. Sure Gino now speaks with a British accent, and the Goons have stopped breathing through their mouths, but the musical equation hasn't changed a bit. Two more party starting punk rompers of the budget variety, made to get asses out of their seats and beer flying through the air. 100% TOTAL PUNK!
EFIALTIS "S/T"7” (La Vida Es Un Mus Records)
After last year's haunting demo, London's Efialtis get the vinyl treatment with a fresh EP on Static Shock Records. Featuring three primitive stompers from their tape plus a riveting new one, Efialtis crash through the ruins of reality like an angry goddess in search of retribution. Four feral tracks of stripped down, high-energy, mid-tempo Punk, with despotic vocals and ominous Greek lyrics. The sharp guitar and buzzing bass wade through combative drumming, all tough as nails and perfectly enhancing the nightmarish unease underlying their sound. Ten minutes of '80s-inspired, rudimentary jaggedness, complete with catchy songwriting, tight delivery and a production that's appropriately massive and the right amount of shambolic. Featuring members of Good Throb, Sarcasm, Dregs, Body Butter and more. A skull-crashing must-have for the coming apocalypse. (Lydia Athanasopoulos) First press is limited to 500 copies and comes with handstamped sleeves, risographed inserts and also includes a download.
MENTHOL "Plastic Garden" 7" (Not Normal Tapes)
Here it is, true believers! The eighth day hail mary, the avatars of that great universal energy rock 'n' roll: Menthol. Six hot tracks sure to bump that needle and melt your brain.
MUJERCITOS "S/T" 7" (Not Normal Tapes)
Fucked-up, gnarly hardcore punk from Mexico, that pays dues to the classic groups from the Motherland like Atoxxxico and Xenofobia, as well as Italian legends CCM and Wretched.
RESPONSE "Stand Strong" 7" (Triple B Records)
Continuing where they left off with their debut EP for Xpressions in 2015, Triple B is proud to present the sophomore EP from Southern California's Response. After playing countless shows, embarking on several tours, and having more lineup changes than one can keep track of, Response has poured all of their anger, aggression, contempt, and frustration into five songs that intend to put straight edge hardcore back on the map. Unrelenting, uncompromising, and fervently straight edge. These 5 songs are the bands best work to date, and show that through true perseverance, one can overcome those that are trying to grind them down. Stand strong. 3 colors are available for purchase and all copies come with digital download cards.
RED DONS "Dead Hand of Tradition" LP (Deranged Records)
Five years after their seminal "Fake Meets Failure" LP, Red Dons return with their junior album "The Dead Hand of Tradition," set to be released this summer on Deranged Records in North America and Taken By Surprise Records in Europe. A lot has happened in those five years. Two of the band's core members Douglas Burns and Hajji Husayn left their hometown Portland, Oregon behind, for Chicago and London. They recorded and released a slew of singles on labels like Grave Mistake and Dirtnap (including a collaboration with TV Smith of UK punk legends The Adverts). Despite the distance between them, they’ve managed to tour regularly in North America and Europe. In January 2015, they reconvened in Portland to record "The Dead Hand of Tradition" at Buzz Or Howl Studios, the same establishment where they recorded the album's predecessor. "The Dead Hand of Tradition" features ten new tracks of their signature dark, driving, melodic punk rock sound. The formula of their distinctive songwriting hasn't changed, but has matured as a result of having five more nomadic years under their belts. These new experiences have only added to the themes of alienation, emigration, and loss, present in their music.
L.I. "On the Corner" LP (Deranged Records)
How often do we witness punk bands that seem to rebirth effortless clones of themselves when their previous projects disband? It seems unfamiliar to catch a band that challenge, and progress with their sound. The now expired Freak Vibe has reformed with their new vocalist, Gabe Gutierrez as L.I. (aka Lysol). Gabe’s earnest vocals are a breathe of fresh air from a sound that was beginning to be pastiche of a signature Australian howl that once co-existed within the band. The swampy, reverb drenched guitar of Chad Bucklew are still accompanied by the pummeling and driving rhythm section of Xtine Lundberg and Anthony Gaviria who keep locked as Gabe expels his words, and give Chad room to displace his breaking fuzzed out tone. The sound still take odes to the 60’s and 70’s, but now with bottled intensity of the early 80’s. The soundtrack of overtly caffeinated, chain smoking freaks.
SPECTRES "Utopia" LP (Deranged Records)
“Utopia” is an 8-song offering of gloomy and compelling gothy postpunk that shows the five piece evolving further along the road to more complex melodies, guitar lines, and singer Brian Gustavson pushing his vocals into higher ranges, adding a more dynamic cast to the overall song selections here. Put bluntly, Utopia is a magical postpunk masterpiece: while the Spectres’ earliest EPs and songs had a gritty Warsaw/Crisis feel, Utopia is a lush and shimmering document of doomy greatness, one of the crowning albums of the current postpunk and deathrock revival. It’s more firmly in the ballpark of bands like The Sound or the early 4AD “lush” postpunk bands of the early 1980s than the band’s earlier material. Utopia is the band’s 3rd LP and was recorded in 2015, but has been delayed for various reasons. It showcases an evolution towards a more nuanced sound – the vocals are more echoey, the guitars feel more atmospheric and shimmery, and Nathan Szilagyi’s driving bass provides a firm underpinning for each track. On tracks like the penultimate “Strange Weather” – which was originally supposed to be the title of their last LP – Mitch Allen’s drumming chops shine through brilliantly.
SKIZOPHRENIA "Single Ticket To Demo-Lition" LP (Todo Destruido Records)
This Lp consists of the 3 trax demo, Freedomland tape, "Raw punk eater" 7", s/t 7", Don't give up 7", and split with Vaaska. Tsuyama Raw Punk!!!!
PIÑÉN "S/T EP 2015" 7” (Self Released)
Simply put PIÑÉN's _debut 7" is by far my favourite release of 2015. This two piece from Barcelona pick up where FIRMEZA 10 left off. Their ideas and their sonic approach are quite similar. Simple primitive hardcore with a really strong anti authoritarian message. They sing and talk and write about their environment and about their struggle to live their lives as free as possible. That feeling transcends to their music which they are not afraid to call a sonic abortion. Hypnotic repetitive riffs over equally repetitive drum beats. No bass but a female voice that will freeze you over. In a world oversaturaded with music that feels and look like a prepackaged product PIÑÉN_ stand up as a unique response to that crap. Their selfreleased EP comes in a silkscreened cover with a 7" booklet that brings to mind the Old Italian Attack Punk releases. To top things up the 7" sells for £3 so there is little to no reason not to pick up this masterpiece.
ELECTROCUTIONER "5 Trax Demo" 7" (Make Em Sweat Records)
5 tracks of bouncy punk from one of LA’s best current bands. This is the bands first recording but 2nd vinyl release. Recorded as a one man band in 2012 but now playing live as a full band. 2nd vinyl release following up MES IV: “The Blood of the Pigs Must Flow in The Street”. A refreshing approach to the Japanese classics like GISM, GASMASK, and ZOUO.
ELECTROCUTIONER “The Blood Of The Pig Must Flow In The Street” 7” (Make Em Sweat Records)
Underground favorite out of LA. This is the bands 2nd tape originally released in 2014 now on vinyl. Remixed/remastered for a much better sound quality than the original tape. Recorded as a one man band but has since recruited members and plays live. Early 80s japan worship done perfectly. In the vein of Gasmask, Zouo, Mobs, GISM.
GASMASK TERROR "Chape De Plomb" LP (SPHC Records)
Thirteen years strong, six records and multiple tours of Europe, USA, and Japan, France's premier d-beat machine returns with their third LP. This LP finds the band taking their fluent mastery of Totalitar-inspired d-beat in a slightly more rocking direction, with wild guitar solos, bouncing high-octane riffs, and (over)driving momentum permeating throughout the record. I never get tired of great d-beat and as a result I never get tired of Gasmask Terror.
LAST CHAOS "Only Fit for Ghosts" LP (SPHC Records)
From the ashes of Teargas (one of the best hardcore bands of recent memory) comes Last Chaos. After taking the southern hemisphere by storm with Australian and Asian tours on a few 7"s, they now prepare for the big leap to our shitty country, the USA, touring on their first LP. Last Chaos play straight-forward hardcore punk, veering into Finnish/Japanese/d-beat-y/raw punk-y territory of songwriting but without becoming an overt genre-exercise, saved by a compelling style of riff-crafting that is both familiar and distinct, sometimes rocking with an energetic swagger and sometimes lurching forward with a forlorn stomp. The playing is tight, with booming and driving drums propelling everything with a satisfying momentum, guitars with just the right amount of fuzz captured with a strong and clear production that keeps everything at a maximum power, and vocals with a tasteful hint of the reverb that too many bands abuse. This should be an easy record to digest if you are at all interested in hardcore punk in 2015.

CHOW LINE 2016 Demo Tape
Oh yeah mate...CHOW LINE. Skummy, fake-British-from-Portland one-man HC punk. Undoubtedly influenced by the antics of Cider and Chaos UK...perhaps a bit faster (see: RIPCORD cover) but gritty and ugly all the same.

MAXIMUMROCKNROLL #397 - June 2016
It’s time for MRR #397, the June 2016 issue! On the cover: St. Louis’s the DUMPERS. You may know them as the backing band to the slippery and enigmatic LUMPY, but here the slime-punk reputation that precedes them takes a backseat to the real story. From their primordial origins to the Dumpers Rights movement, the only place to get the straight dump is in this exclusive interview. We’ve also got an interview with Steve Drewett of the NEWTOWN NEUROTICS, who last checked in with MRR nearly thirty years ago. Steve catches us up on lineup changes and new projects in the intervening decades, currents in the underground culture at large and his insights into everything from the band’s classic records to gigging in North Korea. Reporting from the Rust Belt, hardcore punk warriors CONCEALED BLADE give us the lowdown on the splendid isolation of the Pittsburgh scene, laying down the whole story starting from their explosive first gig. Out of the Midwest, Minneapolis’s KITTEN FOREVER dish on their new record of drum and bass anchored punk. There’s more: UROCHROMES, 2016’s hottest item out of New England, offer a peek into their maniac vision of US hardcore; Vienna’s calamitous post-punk group LIME CRUSH dish on their formation and their future. Reaching into the past, the VISITORS talk about the early post-punk scene in Edinburgh and beyond starting in the late ’70s; FRENOPATICSS discuss the recent reissue of their demo recordings, a small masterpiece of furtive hardcore wailing from teenage punks in early ’80s Barcelona. Plus: TINY KNIVES on their new record and carving their own space between punk, hardcore and metal in Portland. And straight out of Porto, Portugal come DOKUGA, hardcore from the oft-overlooked end of the Iberian peninsula. Topping it off is a scene report from Hattiesburg, MS, a town of less than 50,000 that’s quickly becoming one of the most exciting hot-spots of punk in the US. This issue also includes photo spreads from Sin Orden’s last show and Damaged City fest in Washington, DC. Of course we also got all your favorite columnists and hundreds of reviews of the latest records, tapes, books, and films to hit the streets.
